In a poignant and accusatory video, Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, pointed the finger at President Vladimir Putin, holding him responsible for her husband’s death. In an eight-minute video shared on her late husband’s social media platforms, Navalnaya accused Putin of “killing the father of my children” and orchestrating the demise of her closest and dearest person.
Yulia Navalnaya asserted that Russian authorities were concealing Navalny’s body to mask the true cause of his death, claiming they were waiting for traces of another poison, akin to Putin’s Novichok, to disappear. Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmish, conveyed that his body would be withheld for an additional 14 days, undergoing chemical examination during this period.
Amid ongoing Western condemnation, Navalny’s death leaves the fate of Russia’s opposition movement in a precarious state. In a surprising turn, Yulia Navalnaya, who typically maintained a supportive role, hinted at taking up her husband’s mantle while residing in exile. During a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium, she declared, “I will continue the work of Alexey Navalny. I am not afraid, and you don’t need to be afraid of anything.”
Navalny, a prominent opposition leader, was poisoned with Novichok in August 2020. An investigation later revealed an FSB hit squad’s involvement in planting the poison. Despite Kremlin denials, the poisoning heightened concerns about Navalny’s well-being. His return to Russia in 2021 resulted in imprisonment on politically motivated charges. After being transferred to a penal colony in the Arctic Circle, Navalny’s death in custody prompted an outcry.
Yulia Navalnaya did not provide evidence for her claim of a second poisoning causing her husband’s death. She pledged to reveal the reasons behind his killing and identify the perpetrators. The Kremlin stated that an investigation into Navalny’s death is underway, with the results yet unknown.
Navalny’s death elicited shock and condemnation from Western democracies, with US President Joe Biden stating, “There is no doubt that the death of Navalny was the consequence of something that Putin and his thugs did.” Inside Russia, despite the risks, crowds gathered at makeshift memorials to honor Navalny, resulting in hundreds of reported arrests.
Yulia Navalnaya, once living outside the spotlight, stepped into public view during Navalny’s poisoning, advocating for international pressure on the Kremlin to allow him to leave Russia for treatment. Her composed leadership during the ordeal prompted speculation among Navalny’s supporters about her potential role in leading the country’s opposition movement.
