In a violent incident, residents of a tower block in Göttingen, Germany, clashed with police in an attempt to escape quarantine imposed due to a new spike in coronavirus cases. The lockdown was initiated after two people in the complex tested positive, with 120 cases confirmed by Friday. The clashes involved 200 residents trying to breach a metal barrier keeping 700 people in quarantine. Eight police officers were injured as residents threw stones and bottles. The incident follows an increase in COVID-19 cases in Germany, with a few new clusters leading to a rise in the reproduction rate (R rate) from 0.86 to 2.88 in three days. The number of new cases rose from week to week for the first time since March. Authorities have employed translators and sent texts in German and Romanian to explain the necessity of the lockdown to residents.
The violence occurred as authorities face challenges in communicating with residents, some of whom are Romanian speakers and may not fully understand the reasons for the lockdown. Apartments in the tower block are reported to be as small as 200 sq ft, with numerous children living in precarious conditions. The situation highlights the difficulties authorities face in managing lockdowns and ensuring the well-being of residents in densely populated areas.
Germany had been praised for its handling of the pandemic, but recent outbreaks, including one linked to a slaughterhouse in North Rhine-Westphalia, have led to a surge in cases. The weekly figure of new cases rose to 3,553, ending ten consecutive weeks of decline. Angela Merkel has warned that if the reproduction rate remains slightly above 1, Germany’s hospitals could be overwhelmed. North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, is considering a possible blanket lockdown. The recent spike has not significantly impacted Germany’s death figures, which remain relatively low, with three new deaths reported and 96 in the last week. The total number of cases in Germany stands at 190,359, with 8,885 deaths.
