A pair of migrants who are being housed at the Moria camp on Lesbos were shot with a shotgun after they violated lockdown measures by leaving the camp, police said on Wednesday.

After incident, the two migrants were taken to a hospital where they were treated for light injuries. While they were at the hospital, the pair told police officers that they had broken the camp’s strict lockdown measures and that they were shot at, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports.

The shooter, who is still unknown at this point, is said to have managed to evade arrest.

As of this report, no further information is known about the incident.

The situation at Moria camp, which for months has been tense to say the least, has only worsened during the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, a teenage Afghan migrant living just outside of Moria was stabbed to death by a 20-year-old Afghan, as Voice of Europe reported.

Days later, angry migrants from the same camp defied lockdown and social distancing measures, and chopped down 5,000 olive trees on the island. The destruction of the olive trees was viewed by many of the island’s locals as an assault on Greek history, culture, and identity, as well as an assault on the local economy,

Currently, there are over 18,000 migrants being housed at the Moria camp – a camp that was originally designed to hold just under 3,000 people.
