Amidst the disconcerting scenes that unfolded, dogs and cats found themselves crammed into dilapidated cages, their fear palpable. Rusty enclosures housed a myriad of creatures, from bats to scorpions, offered up as traditional medicine. The macabre tableau included rabbits and ducks, their lives extinguished side by side, sprawled on a stone floor slick with blood, filth, and remnants of the fallen.
This disquieting spectacle transpired yesterday in China as the nation marked its ‘triumph’ over the coronavirus, ushering in the reopening of squalid meat markets reminiscent of those implicated in the pandemic’s genesis three months prior. The scenes unfolded with a stark absence of any discernible effort to elevate hygiene standards, leaving concerns lingering about the potential for a recurring outbreak.
As the global community grappled with the repercussions of the pandemic, a correspondent on Sunday bore witness to thousands of customers swarming a vast indoor market in Guilin, located in the southwest of China. Cages, housing an assortment of species, were stacked haphazardly, mirroring scenes of another meat market in Dongguan, situated in the south of the country. Here, a correspondent captured the resurgence of a medicine vendor, proudly advertising bats – speculated to be the genesis of the initial outbreak in Wuhan – alongside scorpions and various other creatures.
The alarming episodes unfolded concurrently with China’s decision to lift a prolonged nationwide lockdown, urging citizens to resume their daily routines in a bid to reinvigorate the faltering economy. Official figures touted negligible new infections.
The Guilin market, teeming with shoppers, showcased an array of fresh dog and cat meat, a seasonal ‘warming’ dish. “Everyone here believes the outbreak is over, and there’s nothing to worry about anymore. It’s just a foreign problem now as far as they are concerned,” remarked a correspondent based in China who clandestinely captured these unsettling images for The Mail on Sunday.
The correspondent from Dongguan reported, “The markets have reverted to their pre-coronavirus modus operandi. The only distinction is the newfound vigilance of security guards preventing photography, an uncommon practice in the past.”
While the first coronavirus cases were linked to a market in Wuhan, officials obscured the outbreak for weeks, stifling dissent from whistleblowers, including the tragic silencing of 33-year-old Dr. Li Wenliang, who succumbed to the virus. In the wake of a dramatic decline in infection rates within China, the Beijing government propagated unfounded conspiracy theories, positing that the outbreak did not originate within its borders. A discredited narrative, disseminated widely on China’s Weibo social media platform, suggested that coronavirus was initially detected in Italy in November.
Simultaneously, Chinese officials propagated baseless theories alleging the virus’s introduction to their shores by the US Army. As of yesterday, the sole Chinese city still under lockdown was Wuhan, yet even there, restrictions commenced a gradual easing, permitting the operation of high-speed trains.
