The new liberal government in Poland is intensifying its purges against the former conservative government, with police storming the presidential palace and arresting two high-ranking conservative politicians on Tuesday, citing alleged abuse of power.
This dramatic event is part of an ongoing conflict between the new liberal Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, and conservative President Andrzej Duda. Polish police entered the presidential palace, apprehending Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski and his former state secretary Maciej Wasik. The duo reportedly sought refuge in President Duda’s palace.
Prime Minister Tusk accused President Duda of attempting to obstruct the government’s plans to imprison the two conservative politicians, who had been previously convicted of abuse of power but were pardoned by Duda.
In Warsaw, Tusk stated, “Mr. President, this is my sincere appeal for the good of the Polish state: you must put an end to this spectacle. It will lead us into a very dangerous situation.”
Hundreds of supporters of the conservative PiS party gathered outside the presidential palace and the police station where the arrested politicians were held. The crowd chanted slogans like “Free the political prisoners” and “Shame!”
PiS spokesperson Rafal Bochenek labeled the arrested duo as “political prisoners” on social media, describing the arrest as “an illegal kidnapping and a violation of all democratic rules.”
Simultaneously, the liberal government is actively working to dismantle the Polish public service, which is believed to have been turned into a propaganda machine during PiS’s time in power.
