Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivered a significant address at the Doha Forum, asserting that the era of the West’s 500-year dominance is giving way to a “new polycentric world.” Lavrov expressed his regret at being unable to attend the forum in person but suggested that discussions likely revolved around the emergence of a multipolar world after centuries of Western hegemony.
Lavrov highlighted the historical dominance of the US and its allies, built on what he described as the “ruthless exploitation of peoples and territories of other countries.” He noted that the West sought to perpetuate its dominance through a model of globalization it had constructed over centuries. However, he observed that other nations, using Western globalization principles, managed to build their economies on national sovereignty and a balance of interests with other countries.
The Russian foreign minister pointed out the emergence of new centers of economic growth and political influence, disrupting the global balance of power, to the displeasure of the West. He accused the US and its allies of sacrificing globalization for a ‘rules-based world order,’ where rules were arbitrarily applied based on Western interests.
Lavrov cited various conflicts worldwide, including Ukraine, as examples of the West’s interventionist approach, encompassing regime change, sanctions, and direct military interventions. He questioned the positive impact of such interventions on the affected regions, highlighting the consistent negative outcomes witnessed in places like Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.
In predicting the evolution towards a multipolar world, Lavrov emphasized the significance of new formats such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ASEAN, and the African Union. He urged recognition, even in the West, of the “objective course of history” moving towards a more balanced and multipolar world order.
