Amidst discussions about his health, Pope Francis has revealed that he is making preparations for his funeral, simplifying the rites surrounding papal burials. In an interview with the Mexican broadcaster N+, the 87-year-old pontiff emphasized the importance of readiness as old age presents physical limitations.
Acknowledging his recent health challenges, including a hospitalization due to acute bronchitis that led to the cancellation of official visits, Pope Francis clarified that he has no intentions of resigning. Despite affirming that “the pontificate is forever,” he acknowledged the possibility of following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XV, who resigned due to physical and mental health concerns.
Pope Francis, keen on making historical changes, is working on simplifying the rite of papal funerals and intends to be the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. Collaborating with staff in the Holy See, he aims to streamline the burial process. His chosen burial site is the Borghese Chapel of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he has a deep devotion to the ‘Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus’ icon painted by Luke the Evangelist.
Expressing his connection to this sacred place, Pope Francis explained, “As I always promised the Virgin, and the place is already prepared, I want to be buried in St. Mary Major.” He revealed that he prays at the icon both before and after every international visit.
This desire for a distinctive burial reflects a departure from the tradition of popes being interred within the Vatican. The last pope to break this tradition was Leo XIII in 1924, whose remains were moved from St. Peter’s Basilica to the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Looking ahead, Pope Francis has rescheduled papal visits for the next year, including trips to Belgium, Polynesia, and his native Argentina, where he was recently invited by the newly elected President Javier Milei. As the pontiff continues his duties and navigates health challenges, his preparations for the future, both in terms of funeral rites and travel plans, underscore his commitment to his role and his spiritual beliefs.
