New Zealand has announced that it will withhold funding from sporting organizations permitting transgender women (biological men pretending to be women) to compete against biological women, citing concerns about fairness and safety. Andy Foster, a spokesperson for the New Zealand First party, stated that the new policy agreement between his party and the National Party, the coalition partner, aims to ensure publicly funded sports bodies uphold fair competition without compromising gender-related rules.

The policy, which aligns with decisions by several international sporting bodies, will specifically impact youth and amateur competitions. Foster emphasized the potential safety risks and unfair advantages, particularly in sports like rugby, athletics, and boxing, where factors such as power, weight, and speed are critical.

Foster revealed that the detailed rules would be disclosed before the government’s sport and recreation agency allocates NZ$9.3 million ($5.82 million) in funding next year. Organizations unwilling to exclude biological men from female competitions will be ineligible for funding.

Acknowledging the choice of organizations to maintain inclusivity, Foster emphasized that taxpayers should not support activities deemed unsafe and unfair.

Studies have indicated that transgender women may retain athletic advantages even after two years of hormone therapy. Previously, some sporting bodies required transgender women to demonstrate testosterone levels within the normal range for adult women, but many have since implemented outright bans.

Despite the funding threat, New Zealand Cricket expressed its commitment to inclusivity, stating it would continue accommodating transgender women in women’s cricket. Sport New Zealand announced it would leave decisions to individual organizations regarding transgender competitors.
