gaza hunger lack of food 2023

A Geneva-based rights group, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, has conducted an analytical study revealing alarming statistics about the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. According to the study, 71 percent of people in Gaza are experiencing extreme hunger, directly attributed to Israel’s devastating war on the Palestinian territory. The study, based on a sample of 1,200 people in Gaza, indicates that 98 percent of participants reported insufficient food intake, with 64 percent resorting to consuming grass, fruits, immature food, and expired materials to alleviate hunger.

The report comes at a time when Israel faces strong criticism for allegedly using starvation as a method of warfare, a practice considered a violation of international law. There are claims that Israel deliberately obstructs the delivery of essential supplies such as water, food, and fuel to Gaza, hindering humanitarian assistance and causing destruction to agricultural areas in the besieged territory.

The Euro-Med study also highlights the severe water crisis in Gaza, revealing that the rate of access to water, including drinking, bathing, and cleaning water, is only 1.5 liters per person per day. This amount is significantly below the minimum required for survival, lacking 15 liters of the minimum daily water intake.

The impact of malnutrition and insufficient access to clean drinking water is evident in health statistics, with 66 percent of Gaza residents experiencing diarrhea, skin rashes, or intestinal diseases in the past month.

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, exacerbated by the Israeli blockade and military aggression, has created an urgent need for international attention and intervention. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering loss of life, injuries, and a dire lack of essential resources, painting a grim picture of the challenges faced by the people of Gaza.
