Turkey’s President Erdogan causes a stir by declaring that Hamas are “freedom fighters”. He is also canceling a planned trip to Israel, Reuters reports.
– Hamas is not a terrorist organization. They are freedom fighters, “mujahideen”, who are fighting a battle to protect their lands and their people.
This is how Turkish President Erdogan expressed himself in a speech for his AKP party. Mujahideen is an Arabic word that refers to those who fight for their faith.
Erdogan also criticized Western powers for supporting Israel’s bombing of Gaza. He called for an immediate ceasefire, for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza unimpeded and for Muslim countries to work together to end the violence.
– Those responsible for the massacre and destruction taking place in Gaza are those who give unlimited support to Israel, Erdogan said, describing Israel’s bombings and support for them as “murder and mental illness”.
Israel is furious with Erdogan’s description of Hamas, with State Department spokesman Lior Haiat calling the group “a despicable terrorist organization.”
“Even the Turkish president’s attempts to defend the terrorist organization and his inflammatory words will not change the horrors the whole world has seen,” Haiat writes on the social media platform X.
Erdogan also accused Israel of taking advantage of Turkey’s “good will” and announced that he has canceled a previously planned visit to Israel.
