Those aren’t mutually exclusive. Temperate areas are the mid latitudes, equator is… well, duh, at the equator. No backtracking there. Syria at 35 latitude is kind of near both. There’s a massive ongoing climate immigration going on and has been for some decades. Just look at the past 50 years of satellite images on deforestation in Africa or the Amazon.
