Ukraine recently launched a significant drone assault on the annexed Crimean naval port of Sevastopol, marking one of the most intense attacks in recent months. Surveillance footage captured the moment when a surface kamikaze sea drone approached the city in the early hours of July 16, narrowly missing causing extensive damage. Reports indicated that two drones were involved in the attack, accompanied by an additional ten unmanned aerial drones that bombarded Sevastopol, home to Putin’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters.
Russian authorities claimed to have successfully repelled the assault, with two aerial drones reportedly shot down and five disabled by electronic warfare jamming. Sevastopol’s warm water port holds strategic importance as a key access point for Russia to the Black Sea and Mediterranean.
The onslaught reportedly continued for several hours, with at least three more aerial drones joining the attack. Video footage captured Russian forces engaging one of the sea drones, while two others were targeted towards a power station and anti-aircraft installations in Balaklava. The sea drones ultimately met their demise under heavy machine gun fire from a warship stationed in Sevastopol.
Mikhail Razovhayev, governor of Sevastopol and a close ally of Putin, assured that no damage occurred to city infrastructure or naval facilities despite the onslaught. He confirmed over ten drone attacks but did not provide further details. Notably, there was no immediate response from Ukraine regarding the incident.
This isn’t the first time Sevastopol has faced Ukrainian drone attacks, with similar incidents occurring in late April. Razvozhayev previously claimed that the Black Sea Fleet successfully repelled these attacks, citing the elimination of drones by anti-submarine/sabotage defense forces.
Sevastopol’s history is marred by conflict and strategic importance. Annexed by Russia in 2014, following the Crimean peninsula’s contested status, the city has been a focal point of tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Earlier this month, reports emerged suggesting that the Biden administration is considering providing Ukraine with longer-range missiles, including the Army Tactical Missile System, a decision that has drawn criticism due to its potential implications for escalating tensions in the region.
Sevastopol’s significance dates back centuries, with Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Khanate in 1783 leading to the establishment of the city as a naval base and fortress. Despite its historical resilience and strategic importance, Sevastopol has endured significant damage throughout history, notably during the Crimean War and World War II, only to be rebuilt each time.
The city’s status as a naval base has been a source of contention, particularly after Ukrainian independence in 1991, leading to a partition agreement between Russia and Ukraine in 1997. However, tensions resurged in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, terminating the treaty and reasserting control over Sevastopol and its surrounding region.
