A transgender athlete made headlines by clinching a bronze medal in the women’s 400m race at the World Para Athletics Championships held in Paris. Valentina Petrillo’s podium finish meant that Fatima Ezzahra El-Idrissi from Morocco narrowly missed out on a medal in the T12 final for visually impaired athletes.

Despite Petrillo’s accomplishment, her victory drew criticism from some quarters of the track and field community. Peter Eriksen, a former Olympic head coach from Canada, described the result as “shocking,” while Mara Yamauchi, the third fastest British female marathon runner, questioned the fairness of Petrillo’s participation, highlighting her age of 49 compared to her competitors.

Responding to the backlash, Petrillo defended her right to compete, stating to the BBC, “Better to be a slow happy woman than a fast unhappy man. I don’t feel like I’m stealing anything from anyone.” Notably, Petrillo was significantly older than her fellow competitors in the race.

Born with Stargardt disease, a degenerative eye condition, Petrillo had previously competed in men’s national races before transitioning in 2019. Following her transition, she achieved success in women’s Paralympic events in Italy, winning the 100m, 200m, and 400m races.

Despite her hopes of qualifying for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, Petrillo faced obstacles when the Italian Disabled Sports Association refused to nominate her, reportedly due to pressure from her competitors. Cristina Sanulli, a fellow athlete, expressed concerns about Petrillo’s physical advantages, citing differences in physical structure.

While Petrillo’s transition was supported by her wife, and they continue to live together with their two children, she has faced challenges both athletically and personally. Petrillo noted slower times in races post-transition, along with physical side-effects such as anemia and mood swings. Despite these difficulties, she maintains that she does not possess an unfair advantage.

The eligibility of transgender athletes in women’s competitions is a topic of ongoing debate, with guidelines from World Para Athletics and the International Olympic Committee aiming to address such cases in accordance with established protocols. As Petrillo continues her athletic journey, her story underscores the complex intersections of gender identity, sportsmanship, and inclusivity in the world of competitive athletics.
