The Swedish Migration Agency has now decided that Sweden will accept 900 so-called quota refugees from the third world this year. This is in accordance with the Tidö parties’ agreement. The focus is on “HBTQI people”.

During 2023, the Swedish Migration Agency, on behalf of the government, will select and bring 900 people to Sweden through UNHCR’s program for resettlement.

The government’s limit is set at 500 so-called quota refugees. However, according to the Migration Agency, there is a “backlog” which means that around 400 people with residence permits from the resettlement programs in 2022 and 2021 will be sent to Sweden only this year.

According to the decision, the 500 new quota refugees are to be distributed as follows.

– Syria and the surrounding area (Syrians in Lebanon and Iraq): 350 places

– CRRF countries (Congolese from the Democratic Republic of the Congo residing in Uganda): 100 places.

– “Emergency cases”. Priority and urgent cases globally, different nationalities. Should primarily be used for cases where there is a “special Swedish interest”: 50 places.

According to the Tidö parties’ agreement, two-thirds must be made up of women, girls and “vulnerable groups”, including “HBTQI people”.

Furthermore, new “integration criteria” will be taken into account in the combined assessment. Among other things, “industriousness, skills, education and work experience and values important for integration into Swedish society” may be taken into account during the assessment, according to the Swedish Migration Agency.
