Ruling Jews in Ukraine and Israel have crossed paths with each other. On the Ukrainian side, Israel is accused of failing global Jewry by not helping in the war against Russia.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Kornytyuk, has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive a reprimand. This is reported by i24News.
The background is the “harsh” rhetoric that Kornytyuk, himself a Jew, has used on social media when he attacks Israel.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, the Ukrainian embassy accused Israel of effectively siding with Russia in the conflict through its inaction.
In addition to the reluctance to send weapons to Ukraine, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently warned that the weapons that the West sends to Kiev could end up with Israel’s enemies in the Middle East. These are “completely fictitious and speculative assumptions”, writes the embassy.
In addition, by not imposing sanctions on Russia, Israel is failing “the people of Ukraine, including its significant Jewish community.”
“Furthermore, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has been completely silent about the regular anti-Semitic statements by Putin and his minions,” the Ukrainian embassy continues.
Israel’s “neutrality” on the issue is considered “in reality, on the ground, as a clear pro-Russian position”.
According to the embassy, Israel is actively “ignoring the appeals of the global Jewish diaspora, which unequivocally supports Ukraine in its fight against Russian state terrorism”.
Israel’s relationship with Russia is sensitive, as the two countries are on opposite sides in important conflicts in the Middle East.
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, however, dismisses the criticism from the Ukrainian side.
Regardless of the complexity with Russia, Israel has stood by Ukraine from the beginning of the war until this day, publicly supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and even voting in international forums to condemn Russia, he says according to i24News.
