The left in the US rejoiced when a Muslim majority took control of Hamtramck, Michigan. But now they are no longer celebrating, The Guardian reports.
Hamtramck City Hall was packed with Muslims who screamed with joy when the news came last week: The ruling Muslims have unanimously decided to ban LGBTQ flags in public places.
Hamtramck has approximately 28,000 inhabitants and a majority are now Muslims from countries such as Yemen and Bangladesh. The municipal board consists of six Muslim men.
“A feeling of being let down”
When the Muslims took over political power in Hamtramck in 2015, many left-wing activists rejoiced. The city was used as proof that Donald Trump and other so-called Islamophobes were wrong, writes The Guardian.
But after it emerged that the Muslims pursued a conservative policy on social issues, many on the left are now regretting their support, according to the newspaper.
– There is a feeling of having been let down. We supported you when you were threatened. Now our rights are threatened, and it is from you that the threat comes, says former Hamtramck mayor Karen Majewski, who has a Polish background.
Sacrificing animals in the garden
For about a century, Polish and Ukrainian Catholics dominated politics in Hamtramck, but due to mass immigration from the Third World, they were outmaneuvered by Muslims.
White liberals have previously been shocked by decisions made by Muslim Hamtramck politicians, something the left-wing newspaper The Guardian describes as “culture clashes”. Last year, for example, the council approved a regulation that allows one to sacrifice animals in one’s garden.
