The streets of Vladikavkaz are haunted by the specter of terror as a brutal murderer, Vadim Tekhov, once again roams free, pardoned by Vladimir Putin for his service in the war against Ukraine. Tekhov’s release has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among women who fear for their safety in the presence of a killer pardoned by the highest authority in the land.

Roxana Zaseeva, the sister of Tekhov’s victim, Regina Gagieva, now lives in constant fear as she witnesses the man responsible for her sister’s brutal murder casually strolling through the city streets, seemingly indifferent to the pain and anguish he inflicted. In a poignant statement, she voices her despair: “The damp earth should devour him, but he calmly walks along the pavement and eats.”

Zaseeva’s concern extends beyond her own safety; she worries about the lives of other women who may fall victim to Tekhov’s violent tendencies. She questions the authorities’ inaction, asking whether they are simply waiting for another tragedy to unfold before taking decisive action. “Do our penal services not understand this? Are they waiting for another kill?” she demands to know.

Sergei Menyailo, the top official in the region, acknowledges the public outcry over Tekhov’s release but admits his hands are tied by the law enacted by Putin. Despite his personal reservations, he laments, “We all live under the law. So we cannot intervene in this situation.”

Tekhov’s release has reignited painful memories for Regina’s family, who recount the tragic circumstances leading to her untimely death. His history of jealousy and violence culminated in a frenzied knife attack that claimed her life, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Regina’s mother, Zema, recalls Tekhov’s controlling behavior, stating, “All the time he was jealous.” His possessiveness escalated to threats of violence, ultimately resulting in Regina’s murder when she refused to comply with his demands.

The grief and outrage over Regina’s death extend beyond her immediate family, with hundreds of mourners gathering to pay their respects at her funeral. Yet, amidst the sorrow, there is a palpable sense of frustration and helplessness as justice remains elusive in the face of bureaucratic hurdles and legal loopholes.

As Tekhov continues to roam free, his presence serves as a chilling reminder of the failings of the justice system and the profound impact of political decisions on the lives of ordinary citizens. In a community grappling with grief and fear, there are no easy answers, only lingering questions of accountability and the quest for justice.
