The Chinese embassy in Washington DC denies involvement in the Ukraine crisis and asserts it has not supplied weapons to either side.
However, data from ImportGenius reveals that Chinese companies, including one linked to the Beijing government, shipped equipment, including 1,000 assault rifles, to Russian entities.
The shipments took a convoluted route via NATO member Turkey and the UAE between June and December 2022.
The state-owned defence contractor China North Industries Group Corporation Limited sent the rifles to Russian firm Tekhkrim, known for dealings with the Russian state and military.
The firearms were labeled as “civilian hunting rifles,” but their dual-use nature raises concerns.
