Sam Smith and Kim Petras received harsh criticism for adding a Satanic element to the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
According to Variety, the duo played “Unholy” the night they won the Grammy for best musical duet or group.
Smith started out in red leather and afterwards added a top hat with Satanic horns. Petras was seen dancing in a cage with other dancers who were all decked up in Satanic garb.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a Republican, responded to a post by Liz Wheeler that said “[d]emons are teaching your kids to worship Satan” by writing, “This…is…evil.”
Stephanie Hamill stated, “Hollywood crazies still believe their Satanic-themed acts are so edgy.”

According to Variety, Petras provided a religious viewpoint following the performance and explained the act.
I myself grew up wondering about religion and wanting to be a part of it but eventually understanding it didn’t want me to be a part of it, Petras said. “I think a lot of people, honestly, have sort of classified what I stand for and what Sam stands for as religiously not cool,” Petras said.
“So it’s a commentary on not having a choice in religion. Additionally, you may not be able to live the way that others may want you to because, as a trans person, you may already feel unwelcome in the religious community. In our interpretation of that, I played the role of Kim the hellkeeper.
Twitter users also voiced their feelings, with one writing, “This song is sinfully obscene,” and another, “a homage to Satan,” in reference to the performance.
As a Christian, I find “Unholy” to be disrespectful and ludicrous. It mocks my faith by glorifying unholiness and demonizing perversion, adultery, and other vices. This song is blasphemously immoral, which is extremely hurtful to my community and me. BAN THIS SONG IMMEDIATELY!
Trevor Noah, the host, however, reportedly handled it as one huge joke during the show, as reported by the Daily Mail.
He pretended to be speaking with his mother and replied, “No, mum, that wasn’t the real devil… You did forewarn me about Hollywood, I admit.
According to The Mail, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were among those who laughed at the statement.
She stated she’s praying for all of us, Noah concluded the fictitious call by informing the listeners.
