Amidst escalating tensions and opposition to Vladimir Putin’s regime, Andrey Sidelnikov, a prominent Russian opposition politician, expressed to Express.co.uk that Russia is on the brink of civil war and disintegration as a state. Sidelnikov, a member of the Executive Council of the Congress of People’s Deputies (CPD), advocates for the use of force as the only means to remove Putin and his “criminal” regime.

Sidelnikov, with a significant background in Russian politics, asserted that Putin’s policies over the past 23 years had not only led Russia to war but also brought the country to the verge of disintegration and civil strife. He emphasized that a peaceful transfer of power in Russia was impossible due to these circumstances.

Speaking at a CPD session in Warsaw, Sidelnikov disclosed that preparations for an armed uprising were underway. He asserted that Putin’s leadership had necessitated a drastic change, and the only viable path was through the use of force.

Sidelnikov highlighted the role of the Freedom of Russia Legion, a battalion comprising Russian volunteers who believe that violence is the only means to change the current regime. These volunteers, stationed in hotspots like Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donbas, are gaining military experience and playing a crucial role in the opposition’s plans.

He acknowledged that while the Legion’s absolute numbers were still relatively small, approximately 10,000 volunteers expressed the desire to join their ranks. However, concerns about trust towards Russians slowed down the vetting process, as candidates needed to go through several screening steps before being accepted.

Sidelnikov revealed that the Legion maintained close ties with the Congress, and during the CPD session, they passed the Revolutionary Act, proposed by Ilya Ponomarev. The Act calls for the dissolution of the Russian Federation, stripping Putin of all powers, and envisioning the creation of a new democratic Russian Republic with borders corresponding to those before the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The Congress, consisting of 76 former national and local deputies, aims to establish a legal framework for the transitional period, positioning itself as a parliament-in-waiting until new elections can be held in a post-Putin Russia. Sidelnikov emphasized the importance of avoiding chaos during the transfer of power, ensuring a stable transition for the country.
