According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the European Union and NATO’s cooperation proclamation is additional proof that the EU is under the control of the US-led military alliance.
The declaration, signed a day earlier, “confirms that the European Union is entirely enslaved to the duties of the North Atlantic bloc, which acts as a vehicle to coercively impose US objectives,” Zakharova said in a statement.
She went on to claim that the proclamation, “under the pretense of strengthening the transatlantic link,'” supports the principles of NATO’s strategic concept, which was adopted in June 2022.
The proclamation views transatlantic security “through the prism of opposing our nation, ramping up armaments and military hardware supply to the Kiev government, enhancing military mobility in the European ‘theater of war,’ and further NATO expansion,” according to the diplomat.
The clauses of the treaty essentially codify “the secondary character” of the EU’s military policies to those of NATO while “nullifying the EU’s claims to autonomy in this area,” she noted.
The document was also termed by Zakharova as “another hymn to the ideology of Western supremacy.” “It declares unequivocally that NATO and the EU would employ all political, economic, and military measures ‘in the interests of our one billion inhabitants,'” she said.
Against this context, Washington’s motivations are clear, according to the spokesperson. The US aims to lure the European Union into the “global contest” and, should it succeed, “the Europeans would face the awful fate of being an American vassal. ” This would imply that the EU is “losing positions in global politics and economy, with each step becoming more dependent on Washington,” she noted.
Zakharova questioned if regular Europeans want to see such a result while “paying for this lengthy struggle out of their own cash.”
The EU-NATO joint declaration was signed on Tuesday by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, European Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. They pledged to take their relationship “to the next level,” stressing that the West is facing “the gravest danger to Euro-Atlantic security in decades” as a result of the Ukraine war.
