In an effort to gain custody of his children from a judicial system that, in his words, “punishes” dads, an Ecuadorian man has officially altered his gender. Outrage was the reaction from transgender campaigners.
On December 30, Rene Salinas Ramos legally transitioned into a woman, he informed the Ecuadorian daily La Voz del Tomebamba. Salinas Ramos, whose two girls he hasn’t seen in five months and who alleges that they share an abusive home with their mother, claimed that she made the choice to change her gender out of irritation with the legal system.
“Being a father in this country, Ecuador, is punished and seen only as a provider,” he said. “Now that I am a woman, I can be a mother and I am on an equal footing to fight for the parental authority of my daughters.”
Salinas Ramos stated that he wanted to “provide the love and protection that a mother may offer her children” while not allegedly seeking a surgical transition into a woman.
Since 2015, Ecuadorians have been able to legally alter their gender. Salinas Ramos was not acting in accordance with “the spirit of the legislation,” according to Diane Rodriguez, a transgender activist and lawmaker who worked to pass the 2015 law, and changing his gender probably won’t help his case, she told Vice News.
Rodriguez stated, “I realize that given his circumstance, out of desperation, he opted to change the gender on the identity certificate. But no, it won’t do anything.
Salinas Ramos was criticized by the Ecuadorian Federation of LGBTI Organizations for allegedly “taking advantage of other individuals for parental authority.” The group urged the court to explicitly state that the guy does not speak for all transgender persons to prevent the law from being tightened and making transitioning more challenging.
In opposition to the system, Salinas Ramos claimed, his activities are “not against anyone in particular.” He stated that a guy making this shift “is the greatest sign of love that he can provide to his children,” since it makes his transformation permanent in the eyes of the law.
