After a two-year suspension, Michael Flynn, the first national security advisor to former US President Donald Trump and a prominent role in the “Russiagate” scandal, was allowed to rejoin Twitter on Friday. Elon Musk, the platform’s new owner, promised increased openness and a revision of a number of regulations when he first announced an online amnesty last year. The action is a component of that amnesty.
Shortly after a group of Trump backers attacked and temporarily took control of the US Capitol building in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent Congress from declaring Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election, Flynn was banned from Twitter.
Following the same event, Trump and many of his friends were also ejected from the stage. After Musk acquired control of Twitter late last year, the former president’s account was reinstated.
In his first tweet after having his account reinstated, Flynn said, “I want to personally thank Elon Musk for all he is doing to assist safeguard our basic human rights, especially our freedom of expression.” And thanks for letting me join Twitter once more. Thank you to everyone who spoke out loud in favor of bringing me back!
Soon after taking office in January 2017, Trump picked former US Army lieutenant general Michael Flynn to be his adviser. Flynn, however, resigned less than a month later after being charged with deceiving officials on a phone call he made with Sergey Kislyak, who was at the time Russia’s ambassador to the US. The debate arose amid broader accusations that the Trump campaign conspired with Moscow to win the election. Trump vehemently rejected this and charged that Democrats were conducting a “witch hunt.”
Flynn admitted guilt in 2017 to misleading the FBI about his phone contact with Kislyak. Later, he changed his plea to not guilty and claimed that the government was attempting to frame him. In 2020, when the Justice Department finally dropped the charges against Flynn, Trump absolved him of all guilt.
