An official said on Saturday that Greek authorities stopped 260,000 migrants from entering the country illegally from Turkey in 2017.
Takis Theodorikakos, Greece’s Minister for Citizens’ Protection, accompanied ambassadors from the European Union and the United Kingdom to the country’s border wall with Turkey, which is now being expanded.
In order to lessen the burden placed on those nations tasked with guarding the EU’s external border, the Greek minister argued that greater collaboration and help from Western EU members were necessary.
Theodorikakos stated that “the mission (of border protection) needs the backing… of the European public opinion, the European Union itself, and each of its constituent states individually.” We firmly believe that the member states that receive migrants must not serve as their only European destinations.
“There must be cooperation and an equitable division of labor among the member nations. Close cooperation is essential, he continued.
Theodorikakos said that in 2022, Greek authorities detained almost 1,500 people traffickers.
Human rights groups have regularly accused Greece of adopting contentious push-back tactics to secure its border. Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, has been charged by Athens with weaponizing migrants by enticing sizable groups to head toward Greece in an effort to exert pressure on the European Union.
According to the Greek minister, Frontex, the EU border agency, will send 400 more border guards to the Greek-Turkish border this year, bringing the total number of officers on the ground to 2,200.
The Greek government’s 37.5-kilometer border wall will likely be 35 kilometers longer this year along the Maritza River’s Turkish border.
