A winter storm with very cold temperatures has hit the United States and Canada, affecting 200 million people, roughly 60 percent of the population.
Temperatures as low as -48 degrees Celsius have been measured in the United States.
At least 13 people have died in the aftermath of the storm, according to Sky News.
The governor of New York has declared a state of emergency for the state.
Eleven people died in car accidents due to the storm in Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio and Oklahoma. Another person died because he had no roof over his head.
Approximately 1.5 million residents and businesses are said to be without power due to intense winds that damaged power lines.
Power outages have also been reported in Canada, affecting 284,000 people in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.
Residents of coastal and lake areas struggle with flooding.
Several major airports have canceled thousands of flights.
Winter weather warnings are in effect for much of the United States and also extend as far south as the US-Mexico border.
