In what is being interpreted as a “troll”, the African country of Namibia is now offering to take in Germans fleeing inflation and high electricity prices in their homeland.

Namibia, a former German colony in southwest Africa, is lending a helping hand to Germans fed up with the ever-increasing cost of living.

The country’s president, Hage Gottfried Geingob, received German economy minister Robert Habeck this week. Then he explained that Namibia has plenty of room for German refugees.

The African country has introduced a new visa specifically for German citizens, who are now offered to live freely in Namibia for up to six months. There, the Germans should be able to work remotely this winter with reasonable living costs and nice weather.

You Germans are very welcome to us! says Nangula Uaandja, CEO of the Namibian Investment Promotion and Development Board, to Bild.

Namibia is usually called Germany’s little sister. We have cities that look like German cities. This is your second home, a piece of Germany in Africa. We have German architecture, German street names and even a German autobahn! German is one of our languages, he continues.

The former German colony still retains much of its German heritage, including a German-language daily newspaper and two German-language radio stations. German is still taught in many schools.

The country celebrates traditional German holidays such as Oktoberfest and every year holds typical German parties in the capital Windhoek. Up to 15,000 Germans live in the country as descendants of former settlers.

You can live and work here during the winter, you don’t have to fear the high heating costs like in Germany! says Uuandja to Bild.

Our president wants to welcome more Germans! he adds, assuring that, unlike in Germany, in Namibia there is no risk of power outages in the coming months.

We always have electricity! claimed Nangula Uaandja.
