The Chinese government has announced new Covid regulations and loosened some of the most divisive limitations. The choice was made soon after the large-scale demonstrations that took place last week around the nation, during which protesters called for an end to blanket lockdowns and quarantines.
China’s National Health Commission released new regulations on Wednesday, stating that “asymptomatic infected patients and moderate cases” will henceforth be quarantined at home for a week rather than in special facilities. The authorities additionally promised to “lower the scope of nucleic acid testing and test frequency.”
In a statement, the State Council Prevention and Control Mechanism promised to “guard people’s safety and health to the maximum [extent] and minimize the impact on social and economic growth to a minimum.”
Additionally, the new strategy asks for health authorities to identify high-risk locations at the building level, which is a significant departure from the prior method of isolating entire residential neighborhoods and keeping them closed for days or weeks at a time.
It is no longer necessary to obtain a negative PCR test result in order to use public transportation or attend certain locations, with the exception of individuals who want to go to hospitals, schools, or nursing homes.
Schools with no instances of Covid-19 will be able to resume regular lessons, and it is anticipated that stores, cafés, gyms, and libraries would also be open.
The South China Morning Post claims that parts of the new regulations had already been put into place locally in a number of big cities, including Beijing and Guangzhou, before Wednesday’s announcement.
The action comes in response to widespread demonstrations against Covid-19 limitations that first broke out in Western Xinjiang in late November. Following the deaths of ten individuals in an apartment building fire, locals in Urumqi rushed to the streets. Demonstrators said that the firemen’ efforts had been severely impeded by lockdown restrictions, including barriers near residential structures. Officials denied any connection.
People were calling for an end to the zero-Covid regulations during demonstrations that quickly expanded to other cities. Multiple arrests were made as a result of protesters and police clashing in Guangzhou and Shanghai, something that has not happened on Chinese mainland in the previous ten years.
