Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, there are growing concerns about the alignment of Russia, Iran, and China, forming a potential axis of collaboration against the West. Security experts warn of the implications of this alliance, particularly as Iran reportedly seeks Russian assistance to enhance its nuclear weapons program in the absence of a new deal following the collapse of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Israel’s former acting National Security Advisor, Jacob Nagel, expressed significant apprehension about the increasing cooperation between Russia and Iran. He highlighted the exchange of weapons between the two nations during the Ukraine war, with Iran providing “suicide drones” to Russia. Nagel suggested that while Russia may not currently share nuclear technology with Iran, the tightening of relations raises concerns about potential future collaborations in the post-war scenario.
The 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), aimed to lift Western sanctions on Iran in exchange for significant restrictions on its nuclear program. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018, leading to ongoing efforts to revive an agreement that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Nagel cautioned against a swift return to the old nuclear deal, emphasizing that the dynamics have changed, and both Russia and China, formerly signatories of the JCPOA, may no longer align with the UN Security Council’s interests. He stressed that the US should recognize this shift and reconsider its approach.
Moreover, Nagel warned that Iran is assisting Russia in circumventing Western sanctions imposed in response to the invasion of Ukraine. He highlighted the warm relations between Iran and Russia, involving the exchange of information and expertise.
This alliance is further evidenced by Iran’s recent steps toward full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), an alliance that includes China and Russia. The geopolitical landscape is evolving, and experts express concerns about the potential ramifications of these collaborations on global stability.
