US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba that if necessary, Washington will assist Ukraine in “regaining control of its land by force if necessary.” Vladimir Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has frequently indicated that he wants to annex all of Russia’s claimed regions, including Crimea.
According to a readout of the conversation provided by State Department spokesman Ned Price, Blinken assured Kuleba on Saturday that “the United States will always respect Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders and…will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to regain control of its territory by strengthening its hand militarily and diplomatically.”
After Russian President Vladimir Putin signed accession agreements to begin the process of bringing the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson, into the Russian Federation, US President Joe Biden made the exact identical remark on Friday when he warned the Russian dictator
However, neither Biden nor Blinken have signaled a significant shift in US strategy to assist Ukraine in retaking these territories. The latter said that US weaponry deliveries will go on as they have since February, including a $1.1 billion tranche revealed earlier this week.
Zelensky replied to Putin’s action on Friday by stating that he would never engage in peace negotiations so long as the Russian dictator is in office and by signing a petition calling for “accelerated” NATO membership. However, NATO and US officials rejected Zelensky’s application, with the White House saying that Ukraine’s possible participation in the alliance “should be taken up at a subsequent time.”
Zelensky has stated time and time again that his forces will use “whatever methods that we feel proper” to recover all Russian-held territory, including Crimea which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. Vladimir Putin said that despite their official incorporation into Russia, the Donbass republics, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson, will still be protected using “all means at our disposal.”
