According to Frontex, the EU’s border agency, the number of unauthorized entry points increased significantly in the first nine months of 2022 compared to the same period last year.
“Preliminary figures show that during the first nine months of this year, the European Union’s external borders recorded roughly 228,240 irregular entries. This is the biggest number for the first three quarters of the year since 2016 and marks a rise of 70% when compared to the same time last year, according to the agency.
This year, the Western Balkans route has emerged as the center of illegal immigration, with over 100,000 irregular admissions recorded there. According to the organization, the bulk of migrants using this route to join the EU are from Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
The second most common way, which accounts for about 65,000 unlawful incursions, is the Central Mediterranean route, when migrants risk their lives traveling in open boats in an effort to join the EU. According to Frontex, the bulk of unauthorized immigrants traveling this route are from Tunisia, Egypt, and Bangladesh.
Frontex pointed out that because they have been entering the bloc’s territory through border checks, the enormous flood of Ukrainian refugees is not included in the illegal migration statistics. In spite of the ongoing confrontation between Kiev and Moscow, “more than 11 million Ukrainian citizens have joined the EU from Ukraine,” according to the most recent statistics provided by the agency. Frontex said that an undisclosed “substantial number” of Ukrainians have already traveled back home.
