The toll of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine has reportedly reached a staggering 90,000 “irrecoverable losses,” dealing a severe blow to Vladimir Putin’s ambitions. The information, disclosed by a source within Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and a former state security officer, was initially reported by Russian media project iStories and later relayed by the breaking news service Meduza.
According to Meduza’s tweet, the losses encompass various categories such as troops killed, missing personnel, those who succumbed to injuries, or were left disabled and unable to return to military service. This revelation aligns closely with estimates from the Pentagon and the British Ministry of Defence, with the latter indicating that over 80,000 Russian troops had already suffered losses, including around 25,000 fatalities.
Ukraine’s Defence Ministry also provided updates on the situation, reporting the elimination of 63,380 Russian personnel since the conflict’s onset on February 24. Additionally, significant destruction of tanks, artillery, and armored vehicles was noted in the ongoing battles.

Despite sporadic updates on casualties, Russia has largely remained tight-lipped about its losses throughout the invasion. The most recent acknowledgment came from Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu on September 21, stating that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed in action.
As the conflict unfolds, satellite imagery expert Benjamin Pittet revealed through Twitter the construction of a defensive line in Ukraine’s Luhasnk Oblast region, reminiscent of World War II. This line features rows of “dragon’s teeth,” a trench designed to impede vehicles, and firing positions for infantry and vehicles.
In a concerning turn of events for Putin, a British Army officer warned of an imminent “decisive rout” and the potential collapse of the Russian army. General Sir Richard Shirreff, a former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, highlighted the deterioration of morale among Russian troops, attributing it to the unexpected resistance faced in Ukraine. He expressed skepticism about Russia’s understanding of combined arms warfare, inadequate training, subpar equipment, and a moral bankruptcy contributing to the military setbacks.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has not only revealed the extent of Russia’s military vulnerabilities but also raised questions about Putin’s decision-making and the isolation he might be experiencing in Moscow. As Ukraine continues to resist, the cracks in the snow of Russia’s military might are becoming increasingly apparent.

All these rumors about Russian morale being gone in recent months keep turning out to be false… in the majority of frontlines, Russians DO want to fight, as evidenced by the fact that right now, Ukraine can’t break through any lines and the two counterattacks in both Kharkiv and Kherson have stopped. Russia doesn’t suffer from its moral issues, they simply force more people on the front line who can fight. The reason for recent losses are panic attacks caused by Ukrainian maneuvers and hasty retreat maneuvers, which when they can correct them, restores the fighting line to what it was. Russia still has ample will and equipment to fight.
