The Czech minister of European affairs has cautioned that Hungary’s attitude on Russia and the turmoil in Ukraine may result in its departure from the EU.
According to Mikulas Bek, the EU is “a union of various voices” that consistently resolves disagreements by finding a middle ground.
In the EU, negotiations may be difficult and include numerous nations. But Hungary has, in my opinion, traveled a long way and has arrived to the brink of an abyss, where it must now choose whether to turn back or take a chance and plunge, the repercussions of which I don’t even want to guess.
The possibility of Hungary being kicked out of the EU completely, according to Bek, exists.
Budapest, unlike many of its neighbors, has declined to transfer weaponry to Kiev since the beginning of Moscow’s military incursion in Ukraine in late February. It has criticized the EU sanctions imposed on Russia, calling them misguided and counterproductive. Hungary is excluded from the bloc-wide ban on Russian oil because of its substantial reliance on Russian energy.
The European Affairs Minister of the Czech Republic, whose nation is presently in charge of the EU Council, vowed to put in a lot of effort in the next months to ensure that Hungary adheres to European principles.
Mikulas Bek said that Budapest’s retreat on its desire to exclude Alisher Usmanov, Pyotr Aven, and Viktor Rashnikov from EU penalties earlier this week was “a modest good indicator.”
