The former foreign minister of EU nation, Andrei Marga, was accused by the Ukrainian Embassy in Romania of undermining “basic principles of international law” after he declared that the borders of contemporary Ukraine are “unnatural” and advocated for Kiev to cede some of its territory to Russia and surrounding nations.
The embassy expressed its “regret” at the “unacceptable under any circumstances” comment made by a former top official of a “democratic European state,” adding that it is “especially apparent at a time when Ukraine valiantly defends its independence and the security of Europe.”
The former Romanian ambassador made the contentious comment earlier on Saturday when presenting his new book, “The Fate of Democracy,” at the Alba Transylvania book market. He urged that the major international powers unite and decide on a new “security system” for Europe and the rest of the globe.
“We are in a very peculiar situation here, and I take this with all responsibility, Ukraine exists in artificial borders. Transcarpathia should go to Hungary, Galicia to Poland, Bucovina to Romania, and Crimea and Donbass to Russia. He listed the regions that the Communists had integrated into the former Soviet Ukraine and which he believed should be given up as being the boundaries of other nations.
Kiev has frequently threatened to retake all of the territory it lost after the Soviet Union fell during the continuing confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.
After the Maidan uprising in 2014, Ukraine lost Crimea, which ultimately reunified with Russia following a referendum. The Minsk agreements, which were meant to provide the areas special status inside the Ukrainian state, were never implemented by Kiev, according to the Kremlin, which led to the two Donbass republics being recognized as independent entities in February 2022.
