Allowing youngsters to play with inherited plastic toys is dangerous. When researchers at the University of Gothenburg evaluated a significant number of old plastic toys and dress-up items, they discovered that 84 percent of the goods contained chemicals that can disrupt children’s development and reproductive potential.
The researchers chose 157 different toys, both new and old, and analyzed the amount of chemicals they contained.
According to the study, the majority of the older toys and objects (84 percent) contained chemical concentrations that exceeded today’s legal limits.
Even with newer toys and objects, 30 percent of the limit levels were surpassed. However, the older toys were noticeably poorer.
Toxic chemical concentrations were substantially greater in ancient artifacts. A couple of phthalates were identified in a number of old balls, for example, in quantities that surpassed 40% of the toy’s weight, which is 400 times the permissible limit, according to Professor Bethanie Carney Almroth of the University of Gothenburg in a dispatch.
The EU rule on chemicals in toys, known as the toy directive, governs how much of a variety of compounds may be contained in toys. In the Toy Directive, the allowable limit levels for new toys are currently established at 0.1% by weight for phthalates and 0.15% by weight for chlorinated paraffins.
The study demonstrates that reuse and recycling are not always clearly beneficial. Bans and other control measures that eliminate harmful compounds from plastics and other materials are required in the transition to a more circular economy. According to Daniel Slunge, an environmental economist at the University of Gothenburg, the Toy Directive has been useful in lowering the prevalence of harmful chemicals in toys, but it only applies to new toys, not old ones.
