Hungary will obtain considerable volumes of green electricity from Azerbaijan in the future by participating in an international power line project, said Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó on Wednesday.

According to Szijjártó, the current scenario clearly demonstrates the significance of identifying new energy sources and incorporating them into the country’s supply. In the short and medium term, Azerbaijan is one of the most essential, if not the only, partner in this respect, as evidenced by the recently concluded EU-Azerbaijan energy deal.

“Our connections are very crucial, and we have frequent exchanges of ideas, as was the case today when I spoke on the phone with my colleague Parviz Shahbazov, Azerbaijan’s energy minister,” Szijjártó added.

“He [Shahbazov] presented me to a fantastic plan, therefore we immediately came to an agreement: Azerbaijan will create a big amount of green power, which will be transferred to Georgia and then to -Romania through an underwater cable,” Hungary’s foreign minister stated.

Azerbaijan, which borders Armenia and Georgia in the South Caucus area, is noted for its large number of hydroelectric power stations; yet, its total use of renewables such as wind, solar, and biomass energy is minimal. It is unknown what form of green energy will be delivered to Hungary, but the country is a significant gas exporter.

According to Szijjártó, this investment may be accomplished realistically in three to four years, according to a report from the Hungarian news portal Magyar Hrlap.
