According to Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s military operation in Ukraine has helped to eliminate the concept of Western “superweapons.” Shoigu made the statement during a conference on international security on Tuesday.
Speaking at the forum, which was a component of the ongoing Army 2022 expo outside of Moscow, Shoigu asserted that, contrary to what the West has stated, the weapons sent to Kyiv have not significantly changed the battlefield.
“At first, it concerned the provision of Javelin anti-tank weaponry and a few special drones. Long-range howitzers and HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems were recently elevated to the status of superweapons by Westerners. However, the minister noted that all of these weapons were being destroyed in combat.”
Shoigu stated that when preparing for combat operations, Russian forces are “seriously examining” the Western weaponry they have captured in Ukraine. They are also “taking into account the features and special attributes” of these weapons.
The comment from the minister comes after US Defense Secretary LLoyd Austin said last week that Kyiv has received weaponry from Washington that have shown to be successful on the battlefield and that Washington will continue to deliver more weapons to Ukraine for “as long as it takes.”
Since February, the US has authorized almost $54 billion in economic and military assistance to Ukraine, while the UK has pledged about $3 billion in military assistance alone and the EU has spent an additional $2.5 billion on weaponry for Kyiv.
From rifles and grenades to anti-tank missiles and multiple launch rocket systems, a wide variety of weapons have departed Western armories for Ukraine, with the majority entering Ukraine through Poland.
