Due to a lack of social housing, local administrations in Germany are pleading with residents who have extra room to house asylum seekers.

According to a report by the local radio station Radio Plassenburg, the Kulmbach district office in Bavaria has reportedly asked anyone who can offer living space, ideally a spare apartment or house, to get in touch with the relevant authorities and make arrangements for potential refugees to move into the properties.

Although furnished and ready-to-move-in flats would be preferred, the Kulmbach district office maintained that they are “not a necessary.”

While they wait for judgments on their asylum applications, asylum seekers are now being kept at a processing facility in the adjacent city of Bamberg. Then, after receiving asylum, migrants will be spread out across several areas.

According to figures released by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, asylum applications skyrocketed throughout Germany in the first half of this year, rising by a total of 44% between January and June compared to the same time last year (BAMF).

Individuals with origins in a total of 84,583 mostly Islamic nations, such as Syria (24,492), Afghanistan (15,093), and Iraq, filed their applications (7,512).
