Seven-month-old Samera has dark, saucer-shaped eyes that look out while a nurse lovingly cradles her head and cleans her terribly frail body.
She is one of the countless innocent people suffering from the effects of severe acute malnutrition, one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of five, as a result of the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
Temor, her 12-year-old brother, is anxious and feels powerless.
He says, “I want bread and milk for my tiny sister.” We have nothing to eat or drink, and both my mother and father are jobless. We occasionally find bread, and other times we don’t.

I want milk and bread for my little sister, he says. My mother and father are both unemployed, and we have nothing to eat or drink. Sometimes we find bread, sometimes we don’t.
