NATO does not plan to respond to a Russian takeover of the Baltics if Russia decides to enter Estonia, for example. Instead, NATO’s plan is to let the Russians take over the area and then try to resolve the issue militarily or diplomatically, according to Estonia.

It was on Wednesday that Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas somewhat unexpectedly announced parts of NATO’s war planning for her own country.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Kallas stated that the current NATO plans for the Baltics do not include a direct military response to an invasion, but a wait in which Russia is given six months to leave Baltic territory before NATO intervenes.

But then, on the other hand, there would be nothing left to take back, according to Kallas.

– Those of you who have visited Tallinn know that we have our old city with hundreds of years of history. It would, along with centuries of cultural heritage, be erased from the map, it would disappear along with our people, our nation, she said.

Recently, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban painted the image of his country’s NATO membership as a more or less meaningless guarantee in the event of war.

“NATO will defend us if we can defend ourselves,” he said at the time.

We do not know based on what the primer minister made such a declaration because NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg has repeated numerous times that NATO will defend each and every single inch of its territory.

Please wait...
