Unglamorous means of transport such as buses or trains were ruled out when the Swedish Migration Agency this week invited four quota refugees on a domestic flight from Bromma Airport to Malmö Airport. According to the authority, this is not the first time that flights have been used for refugee travel within Sweden.
Government employees – also at the Swedish Migration Agency – may not fly in the service if there are other means of transport. And if an employer pays for private air travel for an employee, the employee is taxed on their benefits.
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, however, there are no obstacles to the agency offering immigrants air travel – without benefit taxation.
“The Swedish Migration Agency can not pay tax for a newly arrived refugee’s trip because it is part of the agency’s assignment to transfer quota refugees to the receiving municipality. This means that the state bears the costs.”
According to the agency, there is no “possibility” to let refugees travel by train between Malmö and Stockholm because the distance is so inhumanly large.
“In order for all municipalities to be able to receive, we need to use domestic flights when the distances are too great. In cases where the distance to the municipalities is relatively short, bus transport or other means of transport are used,” the authority states.
Free Times has also asked two questions about the type of ticket. The first is if the refugees normally fly business class and the second is if it has happened that the Swedish Migration Board has flown refugees in business class.
“No, they fly economy class”, the Swedish Migration Agency answers in the first question, but avoids answering question two.
