A Cricket Australia doctor says Shane Warne’s death was a long time coming due to the spin king’s lifestyle, but still came as a shock.

Dr. Peter Brukner reminisced about the talented legspinner on Triple M Breakfast with Basil and Xav on Wednesday.

He told the Perth hosts Basil Zempilas and Xavier Ellis that Warne’s death at 52 was hastened by a combination of a longstanding smoking habit, poor diet and other factors.

‘Warney, if he had heart disease, which sounds like he did, you know, that didn’t happen overnight in Thailand. It’s been happening for 20, 30 years from smoking, poor diet, etc, etc.’

Warne was a habitual smoker throughout his adult life, and a drinker – though he was known to not be fond of beer.

Dr Brukner said the earlier someone notices their poor lifestyle habits ‘the better’.

He then listed the ways to mitigate the likelihood of heart disease, including ‘good diet, regular exercise, reduced stress, good quality sleep, exposure to sun’.

The doctor implored those in their middle age to find a GP that they’re ‘comfortable talking to’ and to get a check-up and blood test annually.

‘Once a year [for a checkup] from the age of 35, 40 onwards,’ he said. ‘The issue with these things is you don’t develop heart disease in a minute. It’s a very gradual process.’

Despite the contributory lifestyle factors that led to Warne’s fatal heart attack, Dr Brukner was still shocked by his death

‘Just unbelievable,’ Brukner began when asked about the cricketer’s passing. ‘None of us can really believe it, can we? He was a larger than life character.’

Warne died last Friday while on holiday on the island of Ko Samui in Thailand.

Friends who were staying at the same resort desperately tried to revive the legendary sportsman before paramedics arrived.

An autopsy conducted by Thai officials determined his sudden death was from a heart attack.

His family reported he had been having heart troubles in the weeks leading up to his death, while it has also been noted he suffered asthma, which had been giving him grief.

Warne had also completed a 14-day liquid only diet, described by his manager James Erskine as ‘extreme’ and ‘ridiculous’.

The 52-year-old was determined to get back to his peak fitness levels and had set a goal of July 2022 to shed some stubborn kilos.

The cricketer’s body is set to be flown home from Thailand on Thursday morning.

A state funeral will be held at his beloved Melbourne Cricket Ground, on March 30. It’s anticipated up to 100,000 fans and mourners will attend.

His family will hold a private service ahead of the final public send off which could be as early as next week.

On August 2 Warne tweeted that he tested positive for COVID-19 despite being “double vaccinated.” He said “the symptoms are mild.”

In a September 23 interview with Perth Now, Warne said:

“I have apparently got the holy grail. I have been double vaccinated and I have had COVID, so I am meant to be absolutely fine now.”
