GoFundMe is facing potential fraud investigations by the states of Florida, Texas and Missouri after it reversed a decision to redistribute money given by thousands of donors to the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” protesting the COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

On Friday, GoFundMe removed the fundraising page for the Freedom Convoy and released $1 million to the organizers of the page, before claiming they would donate the rest of the money to their preferred charities. The post by GoFundMe originally said that donors could submit a request for a full refund by February 19th and that any leftover money would be given to other charities.

Within hours, however, GoFundMe walked back the refund applications, instead announcing it would be refunding donors automatically.

The California-based company received backlash for removing the page and trying to redistribute donated funds. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he would work with Florida’s Attorney General to pursue them.

GoFundMe also drew the ire of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who stated on social media that he would be launching a fraud investigation.

Missouri AG Eric Schmidt also said his office will be investigating GoFundMe’s deceptive practices.

An alternative place to donate is now available via the Christian crowdfunding website GiveSendGo, and as of Saturday morning, the site was struggling to keep up with all the traffic to their website.
