The sudden death of the 22-year-old player of Ilioupoli, Alexandros Lampis, has shocked Greek football, with the young player even dying in front of his mother a few days before his birthday.
The mourning in Greek football is heavy for Alexandros Lampis, who collapsed during the match between Ilioupoli and Ermionida for the Third National. The unfortunate player collapsed at the beginning of the match, for no apparent reason and while performing a side out. The dramatic moments even unfolded in front of the eyes of his mother, who had gone to watch her son, who on February 25 even had a birthday and would have turned 23 years old.
His temporary resuscitation with a defibrillator on the field gave hope, but did he eventually lose the battle immediately after being transported to the hospital. An ambulance was called which arrived after 15 minutes and Lampis was put into the back of the ambulance. Both sides were visibly shaken by the sight and the match was abandoned shortly afterward.
Apart from Ilioupoli, however, Apollon Athens also issued a condolence statement, from where the player had started his football career. The player was loaned to Kallithea, while from the summer of 2020 he was transferred to Ilioupoli.
The announcement of Apollo of Smyrna
Today we mourn for our own Alexander. Alexandros Lampis, one of our children passed away so early. At the time he did what he loved more than anything else. He played football as he did from a young age in the infrastructure departments of Apollo. He came to sign a professional contract and continued in the form of a loan to the team of Ilioupoli. PAE expresses its warm condolences to the family of Alexander.
Lampis’ collapse and cardiac arrest is part of a continuing trend of professional footballers collapsing and dying on the field around the world. This hit a peak in late December, where four different players died within one week from cardiac arrests during their matches.
The increase in footballers suffering sudden cardiac arrests in 2021 and 2022 is raising questions as to whether or not the COVID-19 vaccines are causing this unprecedented rise.
