The EU now threatens Hungary with hefty fines if it does not change the law that makes it difficult for foreign funding of NGOs, Reuters reports.
It was in 2017 that Hungary introduced a law that, among other things, requires registration for non-governmental organizations, or “NGOs”, and that they report any foreign financiers.
The law has been identified as a way for Hungary to stop left-wing billionaire George Soros’ political campaigns in the country.
Through its cultural Marxist organizations, Soros seeks to transform Hungary into a multicultural society, like Sweden and the rest of Western Europe, the Hungarian government says.
Last summer, the European Court of Justice ruled that the law violates the Union’s rules on the free movement of capital.
Therefore, the EU now demands that Hungary change the law within two months, otherwise large fines await.
Civil society organizations are an indispensable part of democracy. We must support them, not fight them, says Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the European Commission, in a statement according to Reuters.
