A new survey conducted by the market research and consulting firm Ipsos claims that a majority of Europeans from all countries studied have welcoming attitudes towards migrants. At the same time, however, most do not believe that migrants can integrate into European societies or that they come to Europe as genuine refugees.
The survey, which is conducted in 26 countries globally every year to mark World Refugee Day, showed that Sweden was the most welcoming country for migrants, with 81% in favour of accepting them. The Netherlands and Spain were close behind, at 80% and 79% respectively. Hungary was the least welcoming in Europe, with only 57% of those surveyed saying that they are open to migrants.
Belgium and France also showed significant increases in openness to migrants.
In Germany, 76% of those surveyed said that they welcome migrants — this was an increase of 19% over last year’s survey. Paradoxically, however, only 35% said that they believe that migrants can integrate into German society. Also, 58% of Germans indicated that they believe that most migrants are not refugees but come to Europe for economic reasons.
Similarly, in Sweden only 31% of participants agreed that migrants can integrate into society, and in Belgium and Hungary only 28% agreed. Only 26% of Russians think this is the case. In the United Kingdom and Sweden, 51% said that migrants come to Europe for economic reasons rather than due to war or persecution, and 74% of Russians agreed.
Also unexpectedly, the number of people who oppose the closing of Germany’s borders has actually gone up since the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2019 41% of Germans surveyed said that Germany should keep its borders open, while this year 51% said the same.
Only 36% of Poles said that they thought their country’s borders should be closed to migrants due to the pandemic. By contrast, 66% of Russians are in favor of closing their borders.
Statistics recently published in Germany revealed that the majority of migrants who take mandatory German language courses fail to attain even basic fluency. The conservative Alternative for Germany party says that this shows that migrants have little will to integrate, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.
