Two men have been sentenced to nine years in prison after tricking the “blind drunk student” into their car and taking her back to their flat after promising to take her home, The Irish Times reports.
The woman said in court that she’d been about to pass out after a night clubbing with her friends. A video taken in the apartment showed the victim staggering around the apartment before collapsing. Despite this, one of the perpetrators said to the police that she was not too drunk to consent.
Boakye Osei and Kelvin Opoku, both in their 30s, had pleaded innocent at the Central Criminal Court to the rape of the woman in a town in Co Donegal in February 2015. Opuku claimed the sex was consensual whilst Opuku insisted he did not have sex with her at all. However, there was DNA evidence to persuade the judge otherwise.
The victim described being stripped and examined by the men. She had to go through months of blood tests and medication before being cleared of HIV. She described reliving the events during the trial as “reopening an old wound” and says she has been robbed of five years of her life.
Last December, Voice of Europe reported on the conviction of the two Ghanian men. Following the guilty verdicts, Justice Alex Owens certified the two African migrants as sex offenders.
The judge, Alex Owens gave both men nine years each and recommended that Opoku be deported to Ghana after fulfilling his sentence. Mr Justice Owens also said that if Osei had his Irish citizenship withdrawn, he would be “the author of his own misfortune.”
In May of 2019, Voice of Europe reported on a 54-year-old African migrant who was convicted by an Irish court of sexually abusing the intellectually disabled daughter of his former partner. The girl was just 11-year-old at the time. The man was sentenced to just 13 years in prison.
