An 18-year-old man in Birmingham was punched, kicked, and cut in the face with a glass bottle by a large group of teenagers described as “Asians” while he was waiting at a bus stop on Monday afternoon.
According to the West Midlands Police report of the incident, the victim suffered head injuries in the attack. The gang also stole his cap and phone and also kicked his girlfriend in the back. The gang fled from the scene and bystanders came to the aid the couple.
So far, no one has been arrested and the police only have a vague description of the perpetrators. They are around 16-17 years of age, one of them had curly hair and was wearing a blue coat. They all looked Asian, which in the UK typically means Pakistani or Indian. The police believe that many people on the street may have seen the incident and want to contact the police.
“This was a nasty unprovoked attack on a man who was innocently waiting for his bus,” Detective Sergeant Tom Lyons said.
The city of Birmingham is even more ethnically diverse than London and is infamous for crime, violence, and Islam. Per the 2001 census, 70.4 percent of the people of Birmingham were white Britons, nearly 20 percent were ‘Asian’, 6.1 percent were Black, 2.5 percent were mixed race, 0.5 percent were Chinese, and the last 0.6 percent were of another ethnic group. The city’s ethnic diversity has increased considerably in the last 20 years.
