A German engineer has bequeathed his €7 million fortune, including gold and property, to the national populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in his will, Deutsche Welle reports.
The endowment is one of the largest ever given to a German political party.
The populist party was the only benefactor under the engineer’s will, and in addition to gold coins, gold bars, and real estate, the will also contained several patents that the engineer had taken out during his lifetime.
The gift comes at a difficult time for the party, which has faced financial problems and mass exclusion from Germany’s political system.
AfD called for donations from supporters in 2019, saying that additional funds were needed to pay fines levied against it for campaign finance violations.
The actual value of the bequeathment may be higher as gold has increased in value since the initial appraisal of the will.
The man died in July 2018 and the party was made aware of the will’s existence sometime in 2019.
Alternative for Germany later confirmed that it had accepted the multi-million dollar gift from the former engineer after its members had previously hinted at a party convention in December of a “very interesting” item sitting in the party’s coffers.
Party officials noted they hadn’t previously engaged with the man and that he was not a member of the party.
Local media reported that the donor lived in a modest apartment in Bückeburg, located in rural Lower Saxony between Hanover and the Ruhr area.
