Police in Staffanstorp were left stunned after an explosive device was detonated outside of the city’s police station during the early hours of Monday morning.
Upon inspection, police say they discovered some kind of explosive device which had been detonated outside of the entrance to the police station. Police cordoned off the area and technicians from the national bomb squad were then summoned to investigate the damage, Expressen reports.
The entrance to the building is said to be the only part of the police station that was damaged during the explosion.
“It was a big bang, you can’t describe it. It feels completely unreal,” said 35-year-old Sofie Kropp, a woman who lives in the same building and who was woken up by the blast.
Police are still unsure as to what exactly was detonated.
“We take a very serious look at what happened and are grateful that no one was physically injured. We are now taking the necessary investigative measures and at the same time increasing our accessibility and presence in order to create security for citizens,” said Patrik Ahrlin, the police chief in Staffanstorp.
So far, no suspects have been arrested.
This is far from the first time that an attack like this has occurred at a police station or government office in Sweden.
In 2017, a police station in Helsingborg had its entrance blown out by some kind of explosive device. A similar bombing attack occurred at the Law Center in Malmö.
In August of this year, the Swedish national police released a report which revealed that the number of incidents involving explosives and bombs between January to July of 2019 had risen 45 percent compared to the same period in 2018.
