Three people, while sitting near a bar not far from the Maison Carrée area in Nîmes, France, were stabbed by a foreigner who called them ‘dirty French’.

The incident occurred last Thursday after a couple wandering the streets asked the three victims for cigarettes, Midi Libre reports. After the group of three said no to the request, the couple reportedly became quite aggressive and insisted on being given cigarettes.

The situation’s intensity seemed to cool down as the couple seemingly gave up and went along on their way. But shortly after, the man returned with a knife and attacked the group who had earlier refused to give him cigarettes.

All three victims were taken to the hospital with stab wounds following the attack. While two of them were released from the hospital not long after the attack, the third victim, who was stabbed in the liver, is still in the hospital.

Following the attack, police arrived at the scene and arrested the woman who was with the attacker. It’s unclear as to whether the attacker, a 21-year-old who had originally fled the scene of the crime, turned himself in at the police station days later, or whether he still remains at large.

According to the police, the two suspects insulted the group of three, calling them ‘dirty whites’ or ‘dirty French’.

The prosecution has opened a criminal investigation for attempted murder.
